How to Choose the Right Sofa for Your Living Room

How to Choose the Right Sofa for Your Living Room

The KMA Team·June 20, 2025·1 min read

A sofa is the anchor of any living room — and often the most-used piece of furniture in a home. Getting it right means thinking beyond just color and style.

Start with the space, not the sofa

Before you fall in love with a design, measure your room and, just as importantly, your doorways and hallways. An 84-inch sofa looks perfect online but won't help you if it can't clear the front door. Leave at least 18 inches between the sofa and a coffee table for comfortable movement.

Understand the frame

The frame determines how long a sofa lasts. Kiln-dried hardwood frames resist warping and stay solid for decades, while cheaper particleboard or softwood frames loosen over a few years. If a listing mentions kiln-dried hardwood, that's a strong sign of quality.

Choose cushion fill for how you sit

High-density foam holds its shape and offers firm support — ideal for daily use. Down blends feel plush and luxurious but need regular fluffing. Many of our sofas use high-density foam wrapped in fiber for the best of both: support that lasts with a soft touch.

Match fabric to your life

If you have kids or pets, look for tightly woven fabrics with a high double-rub rating (50,000+ means heavy-duty), or genuine leather that wipes clean. For low-traffic formal rooms, boucle and velvet add texture and warmth.
